  • Overview

Although we certainly love the full-size power and performance of the Chevy Silverado, sometimes you need something a bit more modest—at least in terms of size. There is certainly nothing modest about the power and capability of the 2024 Chevy Colorado, but its midsize design makes it the perfect choice for anyone in need of something that can navigate tight spaces or fit into a downsized lifestyle. Recently redesigned for the launch of its third generation last year, the 2024 model just keeps getting better by continuing everything we love about it and adding even more. In particular, if you are interested in taking your midsize truck off-road, the 2024 Colorado should be at the top of your list.

To start, you have two engines available for the Chevy Colorado, providing you with incredible power and robust capability. The standard 2.7L Turbo engine is a beauty with 237 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, while the available TurboMax engine is the same beast found in the full-size Silverado, giving you 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. No matter which engine you choose, you get a fantastic driving experience with both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) available, plus numerous trims and options offered. When properly equipped, the Colorado can haul more than 7,700 lbs behind it, giving you tremendous towing and payload ratings to help you get your job done.

For years, the Colorado has been one of our favorite options for going off-road, and the 2024 model continues this incredible tradition. Not only do you have a Trail Boss and Z71 model, but the ZR2 remains the peak of incredible midsize truck performance on the trail; for 2024, the all-new ZR2 Bison goes even further with 35-inch Mud/Terrain tires, a best-in-class approach angle, and more than 12 inches of ground clearance. Not only is this an incredible truck for hitting the trail, but it also works great for getting around town and enjoying yourself, thanks to innovative technology. There is a standard 11.3-inch infotainment display and fantastic standard safety tech, along with available options such as a wireless charging pad, ventilated front seats, and more.

  • Engines

Although the engine is important in any vehicle, it is particularly crucial when looking at a truck. With a midsize pickup, it is easy to expect somewhat middling performance since that is what you can find with a lot of models out there. Thankfully, Chevy understands the importance of a powerful engine, even in a truck that is not going to fill up your garage, so we find two amazing options on the 2024 Colorado. This results in providing you with an incredible driving experience that is perfect for getting your job done and enjoying time off.

Two Engine Options Offering a Range of Power and Capability

The starting engine in the 2024 Chevy Colorado is a 2.7L Turbo I-4 that delivers 237 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, which comes paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. You will find this as standard in the WT and LT models, and it is available with either RWD or 4WD, depending on which you prefer. If you are looking for more power in your midsize truck, there is an available 2.7L TurboMax engine that delivers a remarkable 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque, elevating your experience behind the wheel. You can find this same engine roaring to life in the full-size Silverado, which tells you something about just how powerful it is; this is the standard powertrain for the three available off-road trims.

    Towing Capacities

Both of these engines allow for remarkable capability, though you certainly get more muscle from the available TurboMax beast. If you go with the standard engine, then the Colorado can handle up to 3,500 lbs of towing capacity, with a maximum payload of up to 1,684 lbs. That is fine for many drivers, but if you need greater capability from your midsize truck, then the TurboMax pushes maximum towing to up to 7,700 lbs. This is a huge improvement—more than doubling the standard towing capacity—and a terrific choice if you need a truck that can both work hard and play hard.

  • Off-Road Performance

While a full-size truck can certainly work well for going off-road, many people prefer the design of a midsize pickup and its smaller size for hitting the trail. For one thing, the modest size and lighter weight can work in your favor when it comes to overall maneuverability, especially with a great model designed for heading off-road. That smaller size can also make a big difference if you like to head to trails with tight quarters or where you need to be able to navigate between trees and similar spots. This is something Chevy understands better than just about anyone else, which you can see in the fact that there are three different off-road trims available for the 2024 Colorado.

The Trail Boss, Z71, and ZR2 Trims

For starters, we have the Trail Boss model, which features a two-inch factory-installed lift to improve its ground clearance plus approach and departure angles. It also has a three-inch widened stance for better balance in tough terrain, along with 18-inch wheels wrapped in 32-inch OD tires, an Autotrac two-speed transfer case with standard 4WD, and an automatic locking rear differential. The Z71 trim takes things further with LED projector headlamps and daylight running lamps, outside heated power-adjustable mirrors, and innovative tech features inside. If you want an unbeatable off-road experience, then check out the ZR2 model that includes DSSV Multimatic suspension dampers, a three-inch factory lift, and an off-road fascia with special rear bumper and fender flares designed for the trail.

    The ZR2 Bison Trim

This year, Chevy has taken things even further through a partnership with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) that has resulted in the ZR2 Bison. This incredible new edition delivers unbelievable off-road performance with a range of unique features such as Multimatic front and rear Jounce Control Dampers for the roughest terrain and AEV front and rear bumpers. You also find 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels on the ZR2 Bison wrapped in segment-exclusive 35-inch OD Mud/Terrain tires to provide you with excellent traction and grip even in messy conditions. You get boron steel skid plates under the ZR2 Bison, with a best-in-class approach angle of more than 38 degrees, power-locking front and rear differentials, and best-in-class ground clearance of 12.2 inches. All of this comes together to create the ultimate off-road monster.

  • Technology

There was a time when choosing a truck meant missing out on comfort features and technology that other drivers got to enjoy. That time has passed, however, and modern trucks have all sorts of amenities designed to improve your driving experience—the 2024 Colorado is a fantastic example of that. Looking at its starting WT trim, the Colorado comes with an 11.3-inch infotainment system with Google built-in, paired with an 11-inch color Driver Information Center display, giving you remarkable tech in every model out there. This includes a six-speaker sound system, wireless support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and remote keyless entry.

    Notable ZR2 Features

If you are looking to upgrade your driving experience, then you might take a look at the ZR2 model, which not only provides incredible off-road capability but also excellent tech features. The ZR2 includes a number of enhancements such as cloth/Evotex seating for added comfort and durability, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and keyless entry and start with remote start functionality. You get dual-zone automatic climate control in the ZR2, an auto-dimming interior rear view mirror, and available options like a wireless charging pad and ventilated front seats for added comfort on hot days.

    Chevy Safety Assist

This impressive technology is not reserved for easy driving or comfort; you also get terrific features to protect you on the road. Every 2024 Colorado comes with the Chevy Safety Assist package included, which features a Forward Collision Alert, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking. It also includes Lane Keep Assist with a Lane Departure Warning, a Following Distance Indicator, and more features. You can add to this if you want enhanced safety tech with more available features like Rear Cross Traffic Braking and Blind Zone Steering Assist with Trailering, which helps you avoid changing lanes into someone lurking in your blind spot with detection extended backward to cover the length of a trailer when you are towing.
