A common trend that’s become more noticeable in recent years has been the popularity and prowess of the smaller vehicle. While this has certainly been dominant with the SUV, the smaller pickup truck has grown even more versatile since the early 2000s, with many manufacturers harnessing big power in smaller packages. A lot of people want to drive a truck, but most people don't need the size and capability a full-size model provides. Plus, full-size models use up a lot more gas. That's why many people are looking to size down and go with a reliable yet still capable midsize truck.

Among the models that are leading the way in this method of thinking is the 2023 Chevy Colorado. The successor to the popular Chevy S-10, the Colorado begins the year with a brand new redesign as it begins a new generation in its ever-growing lineage. Today, we look at this new chapter with enthusiasm and vigor. The 2023 Chevy Colorado has the potential to change the game completely, and we’re here to examine the rulebook.

    The Levels of Midsize Performance

The new generation of the Colorado shows a significant amount of development and design. A practice that many brands have been adhering to lately is the scaling down of several options in favor of a single powertrain. Chevy has taken this concept and has improved upon it. One engine powers the Colorado and takes the form of a 2.7L turbocharged four-cylinder. However, rather than having one engine for all levels of trim, there are three different variations of this engine that gain more prowess as you climb the different levels of trim.

The WT and LT trims, which could be considered the base models, come equipped with a version of the four-cylinder that generates an impressive 237 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. All of the engine offerings pair up with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The four-cylinder powertrain is a new era for the Colorado, and regardless, we’re excited about what it potentially has to offer. The Trail Boss and Z71 trims have a "Plus" version of the same engine, which brings the engine output up to 310 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque.

The most potent form of Colorado’s new powertrain is reserved for the ZR2 off-road trim. Suppose you consider yourself someone who enjoys taking the path less traveled; this is the trim that was built with you in mind. The four-cylinder that can be found underneath the hood of the ZR2 has the same eight-speed automatic transmission and 310 horsepower, but the amount of torque it generates climbs to an impressive 430 lb-ft. Adaptive shocks are also included, and Chevy’s coveted ZR2 off-road package naturally comes standard, as does a Baja drive mode which provides extra traction over the most inhospitable of terrains.

    An Unusual Choice

One engine with three variations is an unusual choice but one that is sure to pay off. It’s an impressive way to adhere to several drivers who might not want a V6 or V8 but still want high levels of power and performance. When properly equipped, the 2023 Chevy Colorado has a maximum towing capacity of 7,700 lbs (though the base version of this engine caps out at 3,500 lbs). While Chevy has proven this fact before, it certainly bears repeating: good things come in small packages.

  • Interior

An Interior Fit for a New Generation

While the massive overhaul regarding the 2023 Chevy Colorado’s powertrain certainly shows the innovation and transition that comes with the new generation, the redesigned interior will certainly impress anyone who sits behind the wheel. Like many vehicle designs that can be found across the entire industry, the centerpiece of the interior is its infotainment screen. The 2023 Colorado has an 11.3-inch touchscreen that is standard for all trims, which completely blows away the seven to nine-inch screens of other models. Placed at the same level as the steering wheel to maximize visibility, the screen sits upright and makes the Colorado stand out much more from the other rivals in its class.

Aside from the visually appealing infotainment system, the basic amenities that start on the base trim are more than generous. Compatibility with Apple and Android streaming services and a six-speaker stereo system is standard, as is voice recognition, Bluetooth hands-free technology, as well as a push-button start. It’s seldom that much is offered on an introductory trim, and the perks only multiply from here. The LT and Trail Boss trims offer such available features as dual-zone climate control, noise cancellation, and a 120-volt outlet which is perfect for any tailgating experience or for when you need some extra power on the job site.

The top trims of the Colorado, the Z71 and ZR2, have more amenities that border on luxury. The Z71 is outfitted for those who want a little more comfort and excitement in their daily drive, while the ZR2 is born and bred for off-roading. Both contain heated and ventilated seats, a Bose premium audio system for maximum entertainment, and standard dual-zone climate control. Safe to say, no matter which trim you decide upon, Chevy is certainly giving you more bang for your buck.

  • Safety

    Advanced Safety and Driver-Assist Features

The wonders of the modern age never cease to amaze and inspire. When looking across the scope of the entire industry, one can’t help but be impressed at the amount of innovation and development regarding safety and driving assistance features. As one of the leading brands, Chevy has never ceased to implement the most advanced safety features in the vehicles they produce, and the 2023 Chevy Colorado is no exception to this dedication.

The WT base trim of the Colorado comes standard with a plethora of safety features such as forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, and front pedestrian braking. These are advantageous in increasing reaction time in the case of a potential collision and provide a level of additional oversight when it comes to being mindful of who we share the road with. A following distance indicator, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, and IntelliBeam automatic high beams are also standard to provide drivers with peace of mind.

    Keep Adding on Features

More features become available on the upper trims, such as adaptive cruise control, which becomes available on the Trail Boss trim and up. We took a look at some of the available packages that can outfit the Colorado with the latest and greatest technological attributes when it comes to safety. The Technology Package adds adaptive cruise control to the fold, which is recommended for Colorado drivers who do a fair amount of highway driving. The rear pedestrian alert helps you keep an eye on what’s behind you, which is always important when backing up and when operating a vehicle in confined spaces. We were also quite impressed with Chevy’s Safety Package, which includes rear cross traffic braking, blind zone steering assist, and rear park assist.

Standard across all trims is Chevy's Teen Driver technology, which allows parents to maintain oversight on the driving habits of the next generation of motorists. Configure the settings to a specific key to limit specific feature use and receive a driving report card every time your teen goes out. Combined with all of the other available safety and assist features, you can feel peace of mind whenever your new driver heads out on the road.
