Families across America are discovering the value of having a three-row midsize SUV as their family vehicle. If you are like most families, you’ve probably watched your kids grow in size, requiring more space for themselves and their belongings. Whether they are going to school, a musical performance, or a football game, they need room for all of their books, instruments, and gear. Other SUVs usually won’t cut it, which is why you should consider the 2024 Chevy Traverse, which has been fully redesigned for the new model year.
The new Traverse is larger and more rugged than the two previous generations of this model. For one thing, it has a profile that is more akin to the full-size Chevy Tahoe SUV. This not only makes the Traverse look more solid, but it also provides more room for you and your family. In fact, the 2024 Traverse has 98 cu.ft. of cargo space behind the driver’s seat, which is the most offered by any three-row midsize SUV available today. This industry-leading cargo volume provides plenty of room for you and your family members to stretch out without having to compromise on space for your belongings. This is just one of many new features of the third-generation Traverse that help set it apart from the previous models and make it stand out from an increasingly crowded field of three-row midsize SUVs.
Starting at
Just like the prior version of the model, the redesigned 2024 Chevy Traverse features a standard engine across all four trim levels. However, Chevrolet has figured out how to offer a smaller engine on the Traverse that delivers a higher output. While this may sound odd, it is in line with Chevy’s commitment to providing more efficient performance on its various models.
The 2024 Chevy Traverse features a 2.5-liter turbocharged I-4 gas engine. The key to this engine’s performance is its turbocharger, which boosts overall performance. As a result, the Traverse’s engine is capable of delivering an estimated 328 hp and 326 lb-ft of torque. This is a significant increase over the 2023 model’s standard 3.6-liter V6 gas engine, which provided 310 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. It is quite impressive that the new Traverse increased output while going with a smaller engine.
Chevy has paired the 2.5-liter turbocharged I-4 engine in the 2024 Traverse with an eight-speed automatic transmission. While the prior model featured a nine-speed automatic, the gearbox in the new Traverse is better suited to the flat torque curve of the turbocharged engine and gives you exceptional control and efficient performance.
The 2024 Traverse comes with a standard front-wheel drive on all models except for the new Z71 trim. This will give you solid performance and handling. If you want more traction, you can opt for available all-wheel drive. While this will reduce fuel economy slightly, it is a small price to pay for improved grip and traction. The new Z71 trim has a specialized twin-clutch all-wheel drive system that makes it even more capable off-road.
One of the most interesting features of the Traverse is its trailering capability. The 2024 model is rated to tow up to 5,000 lbs. This improves the model’s versatility, allowing you to tow a boat or camper for fun or a trailer for additional cargo space.
The 2024 Chevy Traverse actually has fewer trims than the prior generation. Chevy has paired down the number of options from six to four. The Traverse will no longer offer the Premier and High Country trims. Instead, Chevy is carrying over the LS, LT, and RS from the prior generation and adding an all-new Z71 trim based on the popular Z71 off-road versions of Chevy's trucks and full-size SUVs. This will be the first time that Chevy has offered an off-road capable version of the Traverse.
The base trim of the 2024 Traverse is the LS. This features bench seats in the second and third rows, allowing you to accommodate up to eight passengers in your Traverse. It is the only trim that comes standard with this configuration. In addition, it features the Chevy Safety Assist driver assistance suite and an infotainment system with a 17.7-inch color touchscreen.
The LT is the mid-range trim of the 2024 Traverse. It comes with a pair of captain’s chairs in the second row, allowing you to seat up to seven passengers. However, you can opt for an available bench seat in the second row that will give you the ability to seat up to eight passengers in your Traverse LT. The second row also features Smart Slide seats that will make accessing the third row easier for your other passengers.
Chevy has given the LT trim of the Traverse many convenience features that are not available on the LS trim. For example, there is a leather-wrapped steering wheel for greater comfort and grip. The driver seat has four-way power lumbar support that will come in handy on long drives. The wireless charger on the Traverse LT will let you keep your phone charged even if you accidentally leave your charging cables at home. Finally, the LT has a power liftgate to make accessing the trunk easier on your Traverse.
The top trim of the 2024 Chevy Traverse is the RS. This sleek and sporty option has a number of exterior additions that set it apart from the other trims, like a special black grille. The RS rides on a set of 22-inch aluminum wheels with high-gloss black paint that matches its black roof rails. The interior of this model features jet-black leather seats with sharp red accents that have the RS logo. The sunroof lets you bring the outside into your Traverse RS while your passengers will enjoy listening to their favorite music on the Bose audio system. The RS also comes with trailering equipment, so you don’t have to add this as an aftermarket option.
The All-New Z71
The most interesting trim of the 2024 Traverse may be the all-new Z71, the first purpose-built off-road trim for the Traverse. This off-road model features a twin-clutch all-wheel drive system for improved traction, which will do a great job of delivering the right amount of torque to each of the rear wheels. The Z71 also rides on 18-inch wheels that come wrapped with all-terrain tires instead of the all-season tires featured on the other three trims.
Chevy has given the Traverse Z71 a factory lift for an additional inch of ground clearance, as well as an increased track width for better stability. In addition, the underside of the Traverse Z71 features skid plates to shield key areas of the vehicle. It also has a set of red tow hooks to help you get out of a jam and Hill Descent Control to allow it to better traverse obstacles in its path. Just like the RS trim, the Z71 comes with trailering equipment.
Cutting Edge Features
Chevrolet has always been on the cutting edge of technology, using innovations to make its vehicles safer and more fun to drive. This is certainly the case with the 2024 Traverse, which is one of the most technologically forward models ever offered by Chevy.
The 2024 Traverse comes equipped with the Chevrolet Infotainment system on a 17.7-inch diagonal color touchscreen. This is the largest standard screen on any model in the Traverse’s segment. This will make accessing the apps on the infotainment system easier than ever. You can easily connect your phone using wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, so you can make hands-free calls and texts, stream your favorite music, and access all of your apps.
This model also comes with OnStar, providing you with a number of great safety, entertainment, and convenience features. The 2024 Traverse has an available Wi-Fi hotspot so you and your passengers can stay connected, with six standard USB ports for keeping all of your devices charged. The LT, Z71, and RS trims also come with a wireless phone charger that comes in handy if you leave your charging cables at home.
Driver-Assist Tools
The 2024 Traverse offers an incredible array of standard driver assistance features on every trim. Each trim comes with the Chevy Safety Assist suite of six driver assistance technologies. Following Distance Indicator will let you know if you are getting too close to the vehicle in front of you, while Forward Collision Alert will sound if the system detects an imminent front-end collision. The vehicle will then deploy Automatic Emergency Braking to avoid a crash or reduce the damage if an accident is unavoidable. The system also has Front Pedestrian Braking with Bicycle Mitigation, which works in a similar fashion. Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning will use slight steering adjustments to prevent you from drifting into an adjacent lane. Finally, IntelliBeam High Beam Assist will control your Traverse’s high beams in areas of low light so you can focus on your night driving.
Chevy has gone beyond these standard safety features by offering up to 14 additional driver assistance tools for the 2024 Traverse. For example, every Traverse has Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert. This will let you know if there is a vehicle driving in your Traverse’s blind spot when you go to change lanes, helping you avoid a side-impact collision. Like Forward Collision Alert, this will help reduce the chances of an accident. Finally, Rear Cross Traffic Alert with Braking alerts you to any vehicle about to cross behind your Traverse. When used in conjunction with the standard HD Rear Vision Camera, this will help you safely back out of a space in a busy parking lot.
