  • Overview

A lot can happen in a decade, especially in an ever-changing market like the automotive industry. Many know the story by now: a midsize SUV dubbed the TrailBlazer hit the market in the early 2000s, only to be discontinued in America after launching the 2009 model. It would be over ten years until the titular SUV rose from the grave with the launch of the 2021 Trailblazer. Within the decade that the Trailblazer was off the market, to say the industry had shifted gears would be a gross understatement.

Modern-day vehicles often run circles around their predecessors, especially an SUV that faced a decade of shelf time in the American market. Technology, safety, performance, and more, have all received additional research and development and are prime examples of how the automotive industry refuses to sit still. A couple of years after the resurgence of one of Chevy’s beloved SUVs, the 2023 Chevy Trailblazer picks up directly where last year’s left off.

What’s especially appealing about the Trailblazer is its relatively low barrier to entry. The 2023 Chevy Trailblazer starts at an MSRP of $21,800 for the base model, otherwise known as the LS.[a] There are many reasons drivers appreciate the Trailblazer, and the low pricing is undoubtedly one of them. Other trims for the Trailblazer include the classic LT, sporty ACTIV, and elegant RS.

    Two Efficient Engines for Power

The 2023 Chevy Trailblazer performs admirably in most weather and terrain conditions. Two powertrains are available for the 2023 Trailblazer. Which powertrain the Trailblazer comes with is wholly based on the trim the driver chooses. For example, the base model, the LS, comes with a turbocharged 1.2L I-3 engine paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that produces 137 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, with 1,000 lbs of towing capacity. The Trailblazer won’t produce the kind of horsepower, torque output, or towing ratings as a pricier model, such as the Suburban or Tahoe, but it is much better if you are looking for something with good fuel economy. The base powertrain for the 2023 Trailblazer earns drivers EPA-estimated ratings of 29 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway.

Higher-tier trims swap the 1.2L I-3 engine for a slightly larger turbocharged 1.3L I-3 engine. By default, the turbocharged 1.3L I-3 engine pairs with a CVT, much like the base engine. However, unlike the base engine, the turbocharged 1.3L I-3 can be paired with an optional 9-speed automatic transmission. The performance of the Trailblazer sees an adequate increase with the larger engine––offering up 155 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque, which is a 13% and 7% bump in hp and torque, respectively.

Because the turbocharged 1.3L I-3 engine is standard on higher tier trims, such as the ACTIV and RS, the power increase is an added benefit. In regards to fuel efficiency, bigger means better with the turbocharged engines in the Trailblazer, and that’s because the turbocharged 1.3L I-3 engine has EPA-estimated ratings of 29 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway with front-wheel drive. If you get an all-wheel drive model, those ratings go down a little to 26 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway. Drivers purchasing the Trailblazer ACTIV also have off-roading amenities, such as a specially-tuned suspension, a front skid plate, and three distinctive drive modes for conditions like snow and more.

    Plenty of Cargo Space

Chevy goes into considerable detail to ensure its interiors match the quality the manufacturer sets elsewhere, such as with its engine tech. Subcompact SUVs have a specific spot in the market, offering the best amenities of larger SUVs but in a frame not quite so large. The drawbacks are obvious––a smaller vehicle means the cargo space or passenger capacity isn’t close to that of full-size SUVs such as the Tahoe or Suburban, but drivers know this when going into the Trailblazer. Comparatively to other subcompact SUVs on the market, the 2023 Trailblazer is one of the best, with its maximum of 54.4 cu.ft. of cargo space when the back row of seats folds downwards and at least 25.3 cu.ft. of cargo space at all times. 25.3 cu.ft. of space gives drivers and passengers plenty of space to store things such as gear for the kid's football game, your weekly groceries, or even a few suitcases for the family trip.

Features to Keep You Comfortable and Connected

The base Trailblazer model provides drivers with a slew of safety, comfort and security features that escalate with each trim level. While the LS comes with a cloth, 4-way manually-adjustable driver’s seat, higher-end trims include a 10-way power-adjustable drivers seat with 2-way power lumbar support, heated seats or luxurious leather. Looking for additional comfort on chilly mornings? Higher trim levels include a leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel. No matter which trim you choose, you’ll have a steering wheel including mounted controls to the infotainment center, allowing you to change the music without taking your eyes off the road.

Is audio quality a concern? By upgrading your trim level, you’ll be able to have a Trailblazer fitted with the Bose Premium Audio System, comprising seven speakers throughout the vehicle. Drivers can connect to their music library through built-in Bluetooth connectivity or by joining directly through the infotainment center for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto access. Other available amenities the Trailblazer offers include a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot or a Wireless Charging Pad for cell phones that support it on trim levels such as the Trailblazer ACTIV and RS.

  • Safety

A Small SUV That's Big on Safety

The Trailblazer is an incredibly safe vehicle, both inside and out. Aside from a sturdy frame and ten airbags standard, Chevy includes a wealth of safety features for the Trailblazer, even in its simplest base form––undoubtedly assisting in its value proposition. Many features come with the Trailblazer as part of Chevy Safety Assist––a safety suite that comes standard on each model in the line.

With Chevy Safety Assist, the Trailblazer comes with features such as Forward Collision Alert, which works alongside Automatic Emergency Braking and Front Pedestrian Braking. If the Trailblazer detects an imminent collision, whether with a vehicle or a person, it’s the Forward Collision Alert’s job to warn the driver ahead of time. If the driver can’t promptly react, either Automatic Emergency Braking or Front Pedestrian Braking will activate. These features are a crucial part of preventing accidents before they can occur or minimizing the damage if one does happen.

Another feature that comes standard with the 2023 Trailblazer is the Following Distance Indicator. This feature monitors the traffic ahead and will alert you when you get too close in order to help you avoid tailgating and lessen the potential of a collision with the vehicle ahead. IntelliBeam Auto High Beam Assist is also standard and finally eliminates the need for drivers to manually adjust their headlights at night as this system will turn them on and off depending on light conditions and if there is oncoming traffic.

One of the most helpful features of Chevy Safety Assist is the Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning. If the Trailblazer senses it’s slightly extruding out of its lane, a signal will be sent to alert the driver. If the driver doesn’t heed the warning, the vehicle will attempt to correct the course with gentle nudges to the steering wheel. Drivers may also opt for features like Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Park Assist, and more to ensure an even safer automobile.
