Come Here and See; The History of GMC…

While the first GMC trucks were introduced in 1912, the company was founded by Max and Morris Grabowsky all the way back in 1900. When you stop and ponder that lineage for a brief moment, it dawns on you that this is a brand that has always had its eyes on the road. Looking forward as the highways and byways began to cross the country, GMC answered the call to action in 1917, when their trucks were used as field ambulances and troop transports during the American involvement in the First World War. This commitment to honor and duty would continue in the Second World War as well, with over 500,000 two-and-a-half-ton "Jimmy's" saw action overseas.

Following the end of the Second World War, the United States saw a large boom of economic prosperity in the 1950s. To this day, popular culture has a love affair with this care-free time period. While the year 1957 has always been synonymous with Chevrolet and the beginning of its golden age, GMC would unveil their Suburban pickup, a name that is still prominently known today. The 1960s saw the legendary GMC C/K pickup take the stage, setting the standard for hard-working truck everywhere for the next 40 years. The C/K series also saw the introduction of the iconic Sierra nameplate for its most luxurious trim in 1967, laying the foundation for the modern line of GMC trucks.

The 1970s and 1980s would see the brand develop and adapt to the times. The automobile industry would face an energy crisis and drastic changes in style and aesthetics. Introducing the Safari van in 1985, GMC would help build the Mini-Van's reputation as the ideal family vehicle for the time period. (A title now belonging to the SUV.) Not one to rest on their laurels, the brand continued to develop through the 1990s, focusing energy on aerodynamic designs, sport utility vehicles, and further expanding developments in performance and engineering. As we now reside in a new millennium, we can look back at a brand that was there at the dawn of the automobile, adapted when necessity dictated, and will continue to grow with ambition and prosperity.

GMC Sierra: Answering the Call

Just as GMC trucks answered the call to arms when the United States went to war, the Sierra is a soldier in a very different conflict, the arduous task of carrying heavy workloads. More than being one of America's favorite workhorses, the Sierra has consistently showcased its versatility. No matter how big the job, there's a Sierra that's perfect for you. To accomplish the work and lighten the burden you carry, the Sierra comes with a variety of engines that assist you in your hard work. While your eye might be immediately drawn to the array of powerful V8 engines, those aren’t the only options when shopping for a used Sierra.

Since 2020, the GMC Sierra 1500 has offered a diesel engine that goes the distance. The 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel engine has rewritten the playbook as what diesel fuel is capable of achieving. High fuel economy and 277 ponies make for a vehicle that's got some kick underneath the hood and won't drain your wallet at the pump. Choosing a diesel engine if it's available is one of the best things you can do if you're buying a used Sierra. The Duramax is indeed durable and can last for over 300,000 when properly maintained.

If you're in the market for a Sierra, but don't need a large engine, fear not. The GMC Sierra 1500 has an available 2.7L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Active fuel management is available to provide maximum fuel efficiency, with the 2019 Sierra achieving 21 MPG combined. If you end up settling on a model manufactured before 2019 and want a smaller performance-oriented engine, a 4.3L V6 is available. It's still more than capable of doing what you need and offers remarkable fuel economy.

GMC Canyon: Crossing Boundaries and Building Bridges

Any veteran trucker will tell you that "you need the right tool for the right job." While the Sierra comes equipped with engines big and small, you might not be in the market for one. But, just as Goldilocks found the perfect bowl of porridge to pilfer, GMC makes the Canyon for drivers who favor a slightly smaller truck. Reintroduced in 2015 alongside the Chevrolet Colorado, the new Canyon is the perfect companion for worker bees who'd hives are smaller.

Depending upon how many miles it's accumulated since first being sold, you should be able to find a used Canyon for roughly the same price as a Nissan Frontier from the same era. The GMC Canyon has remained relatively consistent with its specifications and offered more options and features. Ever since it made its triumphant return, the Canyon has possessed a towing ability of 7,700 lbs, so you don't need to worry about rescheduling any of your playdates.

Much like the Sierra, the Canyon comes with a diesel option that's recommended if you buy used. The 2.8L turbo diesel, first introduced in 2016, makes the Canyon one of the most powerful and fuel-efficient pickups in its class.
